Finding the Right Prom Gown

PDFPrintE-mail

Finding the right prom gown can be frustrating. It can be pricey and it can take a lot of time. Is it worth it? Most people say yes. Lots of good memories are associated with prom. After years of tests, schedules, pop quizzes and the normal high school drama, prom is your reward. It’s a night you can dress to the nines, put your best foot forward and show yourself (and whoever else might be looking) that there is more to you than the sweat shirt you throw on every day on your way out the door or the uniform everyone wears.

You have individual style, taste and deep inside, when you get a moment to pamper yourself; you are a lovely young lady. Most of us don’t feel lovely on a daily basis because most of us don’t take the time to go through the process it takes to do the things we think it takes for us to look nice. Instead, we stay up late and study and throw clothes on in the morning so we’re not late.

When prom comes around, take the time; do your nails, hot oil your hair, pumice your feet, give yourself a facial and find a nice gown. Even Cinderella took one night off to enjoy the ball!

Gowns can be pricey, so shop the clearance racks or second hand stores if you need to save some money. Why spend $200 on a gown that you may only wear once?

Find a gown that you feel good in! Do you feel like it’s too low? Too short? Too tight? Do you feel your chest may fall out if you move the wrong way? Don’t get it! You’re going to want to dance, sit down and you may even want to breathe in that gown. If you don’t feel comfortable doing those things, you won’t have a good time no matter how great you look.

When you try the gown on, walk in it, bend a little and sit down in it. It’s not going to be comfortable like sweats, but it shouldn’t be restricting.

If you decide to go to a second hand store or you find something on clearance that isn’t quite right, be creative. Maybe you can remove that ugly bow or add a button or hem it to make the full length gown a new improved tea-length.

Shoes are nice, but here’s a little secret…slippers are even better! You’re going to want to dance, and I don’t know about you, but I can’t even walk in heels let alone dance, so rubber sole slippers are the way to go if you have a full length gown. If you have a shorter gown, you can still bring slippers to put on after photos and trust me, you won’t be alone. Slippers will give you the traction that nylons won’t, so it will be easier to keep your balance while dancing.

The important part is just to have a great time! Regardless of whether you have the limo, a date or a $300 gown, it’s a night to reward yourself with no tests, no quizzes and to show yourself that a little Cinderella lives in us all.
